Brooklyn, New York 1957. The sounds of smoothly blended voices soar over the airwaves, as street corners are filled with doowop groups creating the magic that drives the young ladies crazy. In Brooklyn in particular, there is none better than young, talented and charismatic Johnny Colavito. Johnny works as a gifted mechanic in Mike Antonini's Car Shop. He flirts with the gorgeous and ever loyal Brenda Giordano, who is Mike's secretary. At the end of the day Johnny goes home to the Colavito household where his ditzy but lovingly charming mother rules the roost. His father owns the local Textile Mill where he be-moans the fact that Johnny's dreams do not include coming into business with him.

Johnny practices with his doowop group at Rocco's Bar & Grill. Rocco having once been the second tenor in Brooklyn's own SENSATIONS. Rocco arrives at The Colavito home to bring news to Johnny of a doowop talent competition that will result in the winner getting a spot in Alan Freed's new doowop Extravaganza tour featuring the top stars of the time. Johnny and his group are very excited as rehearsals become serious. Johnny's relationship with Brenda is also growing into something more serious.

One day at Johnny's job at the Car Shop, Johnny is called in to the office to take on a special job. His talent for fixing all models of cars brings the big textile magnate Everett Sinclair, and his 46 Packard into the shop. The car is very special to Mr. Sinclair. Johnny takes the job and also meets Julia Sinclair, Everett's beautiful, fairhared and flirtaceous daughter, much to Brenda's chagrin. Johnny delivers the newly finished Packard to the Sinclair mansion in Greenwich Connecticut. Julia begins the process of seducing Johnny with a tempting job offer having to do with taking care of the Sinclair fleet of antique cars, creating a romantic triangle.

As Johnny's group now called "Johnny & The Tones", continues to advance in the doowop competition, problems at home surface to derail him. Johnny's father has been playing the ponies and his debt begins to mount. He borrows funds from the company to try to win back the money lost. This all plays into the hands of Everett Sinclair, who has shrewdly developed a plan for a hostile takeover of Johnny's Dad's company.

As the tensions at home boil over, Johnny's Dad confides in him. Johnny is stunned, but he jumps into action to try to either save his Dad, or go down with him.

Meanwhile, Johnny's relationship with Brenda comes full circle, as Johnny tells her of his sleeping with Julia. Brenda is terribley hurt as emotions boil over in a powerful scene out in the street in the cold winter rain.

As the morning of the attempted takeover arrives, they meet early in the morning at the Mill, Johnny's father tells Johnny stories of the early days at the Mill, and how he met Mama Colavito. They bond like never before as Father and son stand alone defiantly to face Everett Sinclair and his cronies. The moment arrives as Everett's limo, followed by two big trucks pull in. There is a confrontation of words and threats and things look dire indeed as the truck doors open, and ten big henchman walk menacingly towards Johnny and his Dad. Johnny and his Dad are scared, but they will not be moved. All of a sudden six cars come screaming down the road, and pull to a stop in front of the Mill, The car doors open, and out jumps Rocco and his staff, Big Sal, Lenny Mike and Joey from Johnny's singing group, and Big Mike Antonini with his mechanics. The heart and soul of Brooklyn has arrived to save the day, all wielding base bats. Brenda is the last to step out of the car, she has arranged all this. The truckers are backed down as Everett threatens to return tomorrow with the Police.

The neighborhood businessmen all make cash contributions to raise half of the debt. Julia risks Brenda's anger as she shows up with the rest of the money along with important papers that are proof of her fathers dirty dealings.

The story ends with Johnny & the tones on stage winning the doowop competition, which is announced by Alan Freed. All the important people in Johnny's life are in the audience cheering Johnny on. But no one is more important than the sight of Brenda's loving face as the credits role.
